---' Release Notes:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
SHAME on all the other groups who released keygens just because I hadn't
bothered to re-release my stuff for every new version of GameSpy...
DOUBLE-SHAME on one certain group who couldn't even figure out how to get
their keygen to work in Windows 2000!!!
TRIPLE-SHAME on all groups who try for quantity, not quality, in their
releases!
QUADRUPLE-SHAME on one certain group who claimed they 'fixed a server check'
with their keygen! (how so?) ...the server check is DEFINITELY still there
-- I just checked with SocketSpy. Additionally, I'm not sure how the guy who
wrote their .nfo expected ppl to believe that a keygen could remove a server
check... UNLESS the process was explained.
Considering that the server-check is still there, I'd say their attempt at
fooling ppl has failed miserably. Hmm... maybe not -- their release wasn't
nuked... and they claimed like 2000 releases to their name.
...and perhaps if SpySoft's reg server is operating in blacklist-only mode,
then only certain keys have been blacklisted, not all invalid ones -- so it
may be possible to get by the server-check by just generating a new key
frequently, which is distinct from anyone else's.
Anyway, this keygen is from 2000.07.02 ...originally made for GameSpy v2.21r,
however I just tested it with GameSpy v2.24r (reg) and it works just the same
as it did on v2.21r.
To prove my point, I am not recompiling it, or anything.. you can do a
file-compare and you will see it is the exact same thing.
It also has two features that make it superior to other keygens out there --
it totally blocks the server checks from GameSpy versions PRIOR to v2.21r,
and also saves your reg info so you don't have to retype it every time if
GameSpy gets unregged somehow...
For further information, including how to set up a firewall to block the
server checks, continue reading:
v2.21r+ Notes:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hopefully there aren't any other GameSpy v2.21r releases from other groups
out yet, but if there are, let's hope people are smart enough not to nuke
this.
When used properly, this works PERFECTLY in *ALL* 32-bit Windows versions.
There is no overhead, there is no modification of GameSpy (works on all
versions), there is no in-memory patching (what a HELL of a job THAT was to
get it to work with all versions).
If you are NOT using Windows NT/2k (and don't want to deal with blocking IP
addresses with a firewall) you may wish to use my heuristic patchloader
instead (I've also updated it to support v2.21r of GameSpy). It is
distributed separately for all Windows 95/98/98se/ME users out there.
All versions of GameSpy PRIOR to v2.21r are FULLY fixed by this keygen (no
need for a patchloader or anything).
GameSpy v2.21r has made it impossible to block the IP address of
reg.gamespy.com and still run GameSpy in fully-registered mode (SpySoft
freaked out bad and made GameSpy's installer and GameSpy itself detect the
DNS blocking I was doing with the Hosts. file.
So for GameSpy v2.21r you need to disable the server checks using some other
method -- by using a firewall program (such as BlackICE Defender).
That's what makes the patchloader a valid release in addition to this --
non-WinNT users will probably want to use that if they aren't already running
BlackICE on their systems.
Do I type too much? If you think so, crack GameSpy yourself! Anyway...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I achieved a new victory in my battle against software protection -- my
GameSpy v2.20r OmegaKeyGen release was the first-ever GameSpy crack to cause
SpySoft REALLY serious headaches!
They went so far as to modify BOTH their installation program *AND*
GameSpy.exe to defeat it! (rather than just relying on a recompile with code
modification moving the code to different offsets -- which defeats everything
except my heuristic patchloader).
I think they also made a conscious attempt to defeat my patchloader -- the
first patch no longer works (though all others continue to work -- but
neither users nor SpySoft have access to the search data). Then again, the
failure of the first patch may be caused by their redesign (it deals with the
connect() call that connects to their registration server).
However, both the GameSpy INSTALLER and GameSpy.exe have *DEFINITELY* been
designed *SPECIFICALLY* to detect my v2.20r "OmegaKeyGen". The installer
throws a No/Yes messagebox with the following ominious text at the user:
---
Crack Detected
The installer has detected a registration protection crack on
your PC. This is in violation of the end-user license agreement
you just agreed to.
Would you like to remove this crack and continue to use
GameSpy legally?
No/Yes
---
..it ONLY does this if it finds the lines my keygen entered into the Hosts.
file (it doesn't actually search for a 'crack' -- it just searches for two or
three lines on text in the "\Windows\Hosts." or
"\WinNT\System32\Drivers\etc\Hosts." file, and then removes them if the user
clicks the "Yes" button)
SpySoft: a more accurate messagebox would contain the sentence "In order to
use GameSpy legally, you must let it violate your privacy by
connecting to our registration servers each time you run GameSpy."
Well, I've got news for ya folks -- I don't consider server-checks legal AT
ALL!
This is because I don't want the Internet clogged with software contacting
its creators and finding out if its allowed to run (without the end-user even
knowing that such a thing is happening, usually)! I also don't want software
companies to have the power to disable software remotely.
Imagine typing a document in Microsoft Word (or some other standard app that
many people take for granted), and then all of a sudden a message box pops up
saying "Sorry, your annual license to use this software has expired -- do you
want to submit payment now, or close this program?")
However, I realize that protectionists have to keep trying to stop the
inevitable (their company's software getting cracked), otherwise they cannot
justify their jobs.
Unfortunately most managers are too stupid to understand that software
protection can HURT their profits. If GameSpy ever becomes uncrackable,
people will just keep using an older version, and never see some new feature
that might cause them to actually buy the thing!
Installation Notes:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Anyway, you can use my keygen (RBSgs221.exe) to generate a custom
registration key, and when you click "OK" it will import it into GameSpy for
you.
Then (if you're not using my patchloader (which has a built-in keygen BTW)),
you must set up a firewall program such as BlackICE Defender.
Anyway for BlackICE, you have to open the firewall.ini in the
Network ICE\BlackICE installation dir, and block the IP addresses of:
reg.gamespy.com (currently 64.209.134.40)
spy-software.com (currently 216.157.53.206)
ads.gamespy.com (currently 207.199.1.96)
(you may need to do a few DNS queries in a program like NSLookup or CyberKit
to find the new IP addresses if they change them)
Anyway, currently they haven't changed 'em yet, so blocking those IP
addresses is accomplished in BlackICE's firewall.ini file like this:
[MANUAL IP ACCEPT]
REJECT, 64.209.134.40, reg.gamespy.com, 2000-07-01 9:00:00, PERPETUAL
REJECT, 216.157.53.206, spy-software.com, 2000-07-01 9:00:00, PERPETUAL
REJECT, 207.199.1.96, ads.gamespy.com, 2000-07-01 9:00:00, PERPETUAL
For versions of GameSpy prior to v2.21r, you may use the Hosts. file DNS
blocking feature of the keygen (it will ask you which version of GameSpy you
plan to use), and then this will not be necessary.
I realize that this requires a little bit of effort on the part of some
people (especially if they aren't running BlackICE yet -- if so, WHY NOT?!?),
but it is well worth the effort -- and the result is better than a
patchloader, because it is more reliable (even works in NT4 and NT2k
flawlessly. Plus, it should work with future versions of GameSpy (no way for
'em to stop it now -- without FORCING a server check prior to allowing
GameSpy to be used at all)
BTW: BlackICE Defender may cost a little for those who don't want to evaluate
it for free first (just check around -- it is heavily promoted by the
scene), but it is well worth it, and will protect you from all sorts of
crap while not interfering with online games (keep in running in
Cautious mode, otherwise it blocks the high ports needed for ICQ and all
the online games like Quake2, Unreal Tournament, etc.)
For details, see:
----------------
http://www.networkice.com/html/blackice_defender.html
...after you've got that set up, you're ready to fully evaluate GameSpy =)
...just run GameSpy.exe (yes, any regular, unpatched, "registered users
only" or "shareware" version will work just fine).
As before, you can use the IRC chat feature that's built into GameSpy too now
(just use something OTHER than "gamespy@gamespy.com" for your e-mail address
if you plan to use the IRC chat feature (since that is sent to whatever IRC
server you connect to, and viewable by anyone who does a /whois ).
Simple is better (ok, this one requires an I.Q. of around 85 at least,
though... but it works on all versions, and reliably).
P.S.
You may have a hard time transferring your buddy lists over from a win9x
installation if you tried exporting, then importing via regedit (in both OS's).
This problem has to do with a bug in NT2k that doesn't let it read the win9x
.reg file properly (in win9x, "\\n" is a valid separator for multiple items in
one line, but in NT2k it isn't). Also, in NT2k, when you write out some
registry files in NT4 (REGEDIT4) format, "\n" (0x0A) is converted into "\r\n"
(0x0D,0x0A... (or 0dh,0ah for us assembly gurus)). This causes NT2k to not be
able to read that SAME DATA (that it exported) back in.
The solution is to edit the REGEDIT4-format files with a hex editor, and replace
the "\\n" (I'm using two back-slashes to signify that it is text, not the actual
newline value... in text, it has only one backslash) with the actual newline
character (0A). Then regedit will import 'em just fine.
